The series has taken the original book and gone far beyond. In comparing this book to the original, The Testaments was gripping and kept you reading, but it was not as good as the Handmaid's Tale. Honestly, I do prefer the series. So, if I understand correctly, you haven’t actually read “The Handmaid’s Tale”. If you are a fan of The Handmaid's Tale on TV, but are afraid to read a book by Margaret Atwood, I encourage you to give The Testaments a try!

I read the Handmaid's Tale in 1988 - and stayed up to read it in one go. The sequel is able to buoy you as a reader in a way The Handmaid’s Tale had no interest in doing, but sit with it and it’s still slippery and at times satisfyingly unsatisfying.
