The film says something important about the always-at-hand possibility of a new day, starting anew and living unburdened by the past. Unable to remember his name or anything from his past life, he cannot get a job or an apartment, so he starts living on the outskirts of the city and slowly starts putting his life back on track. For those looking to become cinephiles there are many lists and many sources. Oscar-nominated The Man Without a Past comes from Finnish auteur, Aki Kaurismäki, who has infused this ostensibly bleak, Nordic tale with an understated kindheartedness sure to warm your heart against the cold, Finnish wind. Favorites: V for Vendetta (2005), The Imitation Game (2014), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), The Man Without a Past (2002). I have this weird thing about starting movies without knowing I'm going to like it.
