The Prime Minister today received the 100-man crew of the INS Arihant at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence. It was jointly developed by the Indian Navy, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) at the naval shipyard in Visakhapatnam. INS Arihant completes India's nuclear triad, PM Modi felicitates crew 06 Nov, 2018, 07.36 AM IST Stressing the significance of the successful deployment of INS Arihant for the completion of India's nuclear triad, the Prime Minister congratulated the crew and all involved in the achievement which puts India among a handful of countries having the capability to design, construct and operate SSBNs. Call it a lesson learned for the Indian navy, which managed to put the country’s first nuclear-missile submarine, the $2.9 billion INS Arihant, out of commission in the most boneheaded way possible. INS Arihant, the indigenously-built nuclear-propelled submarine that completed its first deterrence patrol, is capable of firing ballistic missiles and can stay under water for months.
The submarine, the report said, had not been able to sail for ten months. As news emerged of an accident that may have damaged INS Arihant, it’s worth considering just how difficult getting a sea-based nuclear deterrent off the ground (or under the sea) can be.

Under repair: INS Arihant stationed at the naval warehouse in Visakhapatnam in 2014. Initial delays could be just teething trouble, glitches at various stages of getting the reactor to go critical and during harbour trials; major differences between the Russian-supplied design and indigenous fabrication are said to have left many issues unaddressed satisfactorily. The Indian navy inducted first indigenously built nuclear-armed submarine, the INS Arihant in 2009.
